At the materials tier, the customer sets the clock

Published Jul 5, 2026 · Updated Jul 9, 2026 · .md

The 20 graph nodes this analysis spans average -16.3% in 2026; the furthest ahead is Asahi Kasei (+24.6%) and the furthest behind is Enchem (-76.7%) (valuechain.wiki graph of 1359 nodes and 3678 sourced edges, as of 2026-07-10).

Same materials tier, opposite returns

The six companies just added to the battery materials tier do not move as one. Yunnan Energy (Enjie), the world's top separator maker, returned +76% in 2025 and +26% in 2026, and Asahi Kasei, the conglomerate that houses a separator business, rose +47% and +25%. On the other side, precursor maker EcoPro Materials is at -41% in 2026 and separator maker SK IE Technology at -42%. Two years into the cell recovery, only half of the tier above followed.

The cathode piece (The cathode paradox) named three variables that block propagation from cells to materials: customer concentration, contract execution and chemistry mismatch, and left the raw-material tier as the next test. With precursor, anode and separator nodes now on the map, that test can run.

Where the cycle arrived: Chinese separators and a Japanese conglomerate

Enjie is the case of actual arrival. The stock collapsed to -73% in 2023, then caught the recovery of its largest customer CATL (+74% in 2024) one beat later. The China-leads pattern observed in the cathode piece, where Ronbay broke and recovered a year ahead of Korean peers, repeats in separators.

Asahi Kasei's rise is different in kind. Separators are one business among several inside its Material segment, a weight its own filing marks as minor. The conglomerate cushion producing a different clock from pure-plays is the same grammar seen at the defense primes.

Where it broke: Korean materials tied to one customer

The two nodes where propagation broke share the same customer problem. About 80% of SK IE Technology's revenue goes to SK On; while SK On stayed weak on its EV-heavy book (-20% in 2026), its separator affiliate followed it down to -42%, in the same year Enjie rose +26%. EcoPro Materials sends most of its revenue to group cathode maker EcoPro BM (-46% in 2026) and tracked it to -41%.

The cathode piece framed customer concentration as a bargaining-power issue. At the raw-material tier it works more fundamentally: with a single customer, the customer's clock becomes your own.

Anodes: a tier on its own cycle

The two anode nodes show yet another clock. Daejoo Electronic Materials, in silicon anodes, went +49% in 2024, -26% in 2025 and +17% in 2026, responding to adoption news (Kia EV3, Porsche Taycan) more than to cell recovery. BTR, the global No.1, has held 21%+ share for fifteen years yet saw 2024 revenue fall 43%, as falling graphite prices offset the volume lead. Share and clock are separate things.

One layer deeper, the same: electrolyte and copper foil

The pattern reappears in the electrolyte and copper-foil layers. Tinci, the world's top electrolyte maker, caught its largest customer CATL's recovery and turned +124% in 2025 and +33.5% in 2026, the same China-materials clock as Enjie. Korea's top electrolyte maker Enchem, by contrast, fell three straight years from 2024 at -21%, -26% and -75%, and additive maker Chunbo gave back -37% in 2026 after a +59% rebound. In copper foil, Lotte Energy Materials managed only +2% in 2026 as a North American customer halted production. Chinese materials tied to a recovering cell maker turn while Korean materials tied to EV customers stall, and the shape holds across material types. One more variable enters: names that hold their own cost, like Tinci and Enchem integrating lithium salt, ride their customers' clock less.

At the raw material's raw material, the clock changes: lithium is a commodity

Go one layer deeper, to lithium and minerals, and the customer clock becomes a commodity clock. Lithium miners fell together after the 2022 price peak regardless of whether their customers recovered: Ganfeng -56% in 2023, Albemarle -40% in 2024, SQM -39%. And they jumped together in 2025 when the lithium price bottomed: Ganfeng +108%, SQM +89%, Albemarle +68%. The key is that they moved the same way whether the customer was CATL or LG Energy Solution. The customer set the clock down to the materials tier, but at the minerals below it a single commodity cycle, the lithium price, pulls them all up and down together.

Verdict

The cell recovery reached the materials tier selectively, and what decided arrival was not depth in the chain but the customer book. Enjie, tied to a recovering cell maker (CATL), turned; nodes tied to a weak cell maker (SK On) or a single in-group customer (EcoPro BM) stalled. At the materials tier, the customer sets the clock. The remaining test is lithium and minerals, a layer that runs on its own commodity cycle and comes with the next expansion. For the full arrangement of clocks, continue with Many clocks.

Update log
  • Jul 5, 2026 Extended to lithium and minerals (Albemarle, SQM, Ganfeng, POSCO Holdings, PNT), marking the thesis boundary: customer clock down to the materials tier, then a commodity clock (the lithium price) at the minerals below.
  • Jul 5, 2026 Reinforced with the electrolyte and copper-foil layer (Tinci, Enchem, Chunbo, Lotte Energy Materials, SKC): China's Tinci +33.5% vs Korea's Enchem -75%.
